Beyond the Edges of the Map

It's necessary now and then for some people to travel beyond the edges of the map, to abandon the charted territories of civilized society and strike out into the unknown...just to see what's out there. It's murky territory, indistinct and undefined, not always welcoming, occasionally dangerous. There are good reasons it remains unsurveyed.

There are demons beyond the borders, and saints as well. It's not always easy to tell them apart. Sometimes they inhabit the same body. Sometimes the body is ours. There are wonders and horrors, not in equal measure. It's easy to get lost; the standard moral compass no longer points to true north.

A very few people live beyond the borders of the map, but a great many visit. Only a small number absolutely refuse to venture there. But even those few are aware the uncharted world exists, just outside their peripheral vision, waiting for them.
